Our two baths, Sawarabi-no-Yu and Hōō no Yu are designed to be spacious and relaxing. Black silica is added to the water, giving it various properties beneficial to health and relaxation. Enter a world of meditation surrounded by water in front of the gently flowing Uji River.
The Black silica is a rare and precious stone that can only be gathered in the Kaminokuni region in Hokkaido. One of its numerous properties is that it emits more infrared semi-permanently at a normal temperature. In other words, it produces heat naturally and is able to keep something warm. Black silica results from the sedimentation diatoms (a group of seaweed) that fossilized billions years ago, and due to the geotectonic movement has reached the surface. For those reasons, Black silica is used in negative ionization therapy and is said to be effective for curing various diseases and for body care.
As a consequence, the place where the stone is gathered has been called "Land of God"or "The Sun Goddess's Place" and other divinity-related monikers. Black silica itself is known as "The Stone of God".
In ancient times, the Naumann's elephant living in the area used to black silica infused water to heal their wounds. Ainu tribe members used the stone brewed in water to cure all kinds of aches and injuries.More recently, as research on the stone’s heat property progresses, Black silica powder has been introduced in the fiber of clothes made for skiing or mountain climbing.
In Hokkaido, a lot of farmers use it to grow vegetables, adding it to water to destroy legionella bacteria.
Many University laboratories are researching new uses for black silica in various fields such as fish breeding and rice growing.
